    Resolved [RESOLVED] APC Power Backups

My 3 home computers has it's own power backup. The thought occurred to me tonight; how can I know the battery life is still good? They vary in age 2-5 years. It has, fortunately, been some time since a power surge or lightening strikes nearby caused a power outage. I do not recall if either of the battery backups kept the computer on for a few minutes. If it didn't, than I have my answer--the battery is shot. These backups are 350W and 450W and 8Amps. If the battery is dead then they are acting only as power strip without any protection. That is my guess but I would like to receive your input. As usual, TIA.

If model does not have a battery diagnosis/test option,
Not aware of any methods to test a battery of a UPS via the computer.

The Liebert models that I use, has a battery test option with battery strength/level indicators.
    Cheers.

Here's one way to test the UPS battery:

Boot the computer into the CMOS/BIOS Setup screen.

Reach over and unplug the UPS from the wall receptacle.

If the computer immediately shuts down, the UPS battery is shot and needs to be replaced.

I would replace any battery that is much over 4 years as a matter of course - even if it does test OK it is highly unlikely to last much longer. I generally reckon to get between 3 and 4 years life out of mine.

Even a 350VA UPS should give you 5 minutes runtime if the batteries are in decent shape.

Many thanks fellas for your replies. Doc I am beginning my shopping for a new battery for my Energizer ER-HM450. Tomorrow I'll be checking the other 2, following the instructions you gave about the BIOS. Without any hesitation, my computer turned off immediately.

Yuasa batteries are always top quality, though they cost a little more than some replacements. I've always been very pleased with them. Going for the UPS maker's own replacements is normally very expensive.

Doc/Nick, thanks for your further input. I found an APC UPS in the garage. I am not sure if I had used it before since it was boxed. I'll know tomorrow because I am charging it overnight. [B]And[B] I had forgotten that I have a separately purchased insurance coverage from my power company that protects my computers; etc from power surges and lightening; etc. Took a look at that policy this afternoon and feel somewhat relieved since it affords protection up to $10,000. For those in Florida and have Florida Power Corp, you may want to consider looking into such coverage.
