Win7 vieo editting software recommendations

I've got my new quad-core, 4gb PC running Win7 Pro a couple months ago, and thought I'd try some video editting (I never would have attempted this with my old PC).

I DVR'd a couple of my favorite Car Shows from U-verse and burned them to DVDs. (I bought a DVD recorder last month). I'd like to edit them to remove the commercials and reduce their size so I can burn several to a new DVD.
Any freeware suggestions? (I've never editted video before, only audio files)

Also, I did notice that it seemed to break the programs up into multiple files, is this because I paused it during a couple commercials while recording from DVR to DVD?

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As far as editing goes you could use the latest Windows Movie Maker for Win 7
