The amz file is not the music file, but a file that directs the amazon downloader program to the correct location to actually download the mp3 file.
When you click on the download link (or complete the checkout), you are supposed to select Open with MP3 downloader.

The downloader will then run and download the mp3.
As you can see when i purchased an mp3 from amazon, the amz file is a tiny 14kb file, effectively an encrypted file that will point the Amazon downloader program to the correct internet location with the correct validation that the purchase is genuine and authorized.

Since i saved the amz file instead of clicking Open.. when asked, I can now add the download to the manager, by right clicking the file, selecting Open with and selecting the amazon downloader.
That will queue and download the file, in vista it drops the file into a folder at Users/user name/music/Amazon MP3/folder name based on artist and track/

There is no such thing as overkill. 'Open fire' and 'is it dead?' are the only sane options when threatened.
