Resolved [RESOLVED] Event Viewer doesn't work

Event viewer doesn't work on Windows 7 Home Premium. Works on my 98, Vista and Laptop with Windows 7. Computer is clean, ran several Antivirus and Malware scans and all came up clean. Ran SFC and it completed OK. All required Services are running. Have Googled and gone to Microsoft but haven't found a solution yet. It's real handy for troubleshooting so if someone can help it will be appreciated.

dneilson--When you say Event Viewer does not work, what exactly do you mean? You cannot open the EV window? Or you can open it but it is blank? The Computer Management window does not open? Are you getting any error messages?
Here are two references that may help
http://www.winvistaclub.com/t58.html (The Service is named Windows Event Log.)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-us Note the fixes toward the end if SFC cannot repair a file.

Try typing "eventvwr.exe" without the quotes into the Start search box and see if that brings it up.

Welshjim & SuperSparks--Thanks for the reply and my apologies. Of COURSE I should have explained it better. The Windows Event Log Service is Automatic and Started. Event Viewer opens. On the first page I select Windows Logs. The next page opens and I select System. The top line says "Number of events 36,548 (!) New events available"-----but----they aren't there.

    Again, Thanks for the reply.

You could try clearing the log from the Action menu. It'll mean losing all the events so far, but it may get it working again for the future, hopefully.

dneilson--Have a look in the Event Viewer View|Customize window. Do you have the appropriate items checked?

I don't have an option to clear the log in my Action menu and yes, the items were checked. I noticed I had a split screen, the upper part was the event log with a vertical scroll bar which would not scroll down the log. I should have picked up on this sooner but at my age I'm lucky if I pick myself up the morning. Looking carefully at the lower part of the split I saw a small obscure black X in the upper right corner. So I whacked the X...Bada Bing Bada Boom.......there was my Event Log. As usual I'm about as sharp as a marble. Sorry I bothered you guys with this. It's great you two jumped in and tried to help--it's appreciated. Thank you!!!!

dneilson--Thanks for telling us the effect of that little black X. Whether you show the split window or not seems to be a function of activiting Event Viewer's Previes Pane.
    Glad all worked out well.
