[RESOLVED] Importing pictures from camera

Windows XP had this great utility called Camera and Scanner Wizard or something like that. Basically it would come up whenever I plugged in my digital camera. What I liked about it was the simplicity: I didn't have to install any camera specific software, it would let me choose which photos I want to upload as well as apply a tag.

I can't find this in Windows 7. I get a run box that includes "Import Pictures using Windows" along with the Windows Live option which I thought was for using with a Windows Live account, which I don't want

Problem with the default import is that it won't let me choose which photos to import. And it forces me to create some kind of subfolder even if I don't want to!

Is there any way to get the old utility from XP?

EDIT: after messing with the Windows Live option, it seems possible to use this in the old way like XP. It looked a little more clunky at first so I couldn't figure it out, but once I played with it a bit, it seems to work well!

It's about the only option anyway, as the XP one won't work. I believe the Vista one will work, if you can't get on with Live!, though I've never tried it.

Why I use a memory stick USB adapter.
I just use Explorer and that saves on the camera batteries.

Same here. I use a memory card reader/USB adapter and then my batteries are drained by plugging my camera's usb cord straight into the computer.

I think what confused me was the "Live" part of the name. MS seems to be using that for their online stuff - webmail, replacement for Outlook Express, etc. So I assumed that option was for processing photos online. e.g. it would upload your camera pics and then automatically feed them to your Live account, etc. I didn't want anything like that - just wanted a simple program to copy the picture from camera, tag the filenames, and then save them wherever I want.

Like I said above, I was happy to find that it did work the way I wanted, once I figured out the options!

If it hadn't worked, I would have used Explorer too - just drag & drop the files. But that won't rename them, right?

It depends what you want when you rename them. If you are happy with then same name and a different number after each file, ie "Holiday Pics(1).jpg", then just select all the files that you want to rename and give them the filename, and Explorer will fill in the numbers.

Oh, right, just with the regular Windows Explorer renaming - good point. Getting off topic a bit but something I've wondered about - is it possible to change the style of the renumbering in Explorer? i.e. something other than the pic(x).jpg style such as:

pic_001.jpg
pic_002.jpg

etc.? I did a bit of searching but couldn't find a way to do this within Explorer - needed a 3rd party renaming prog.

I think a 3rd party app is the only way for that. The Explorer options are very limited

Flower1.png is what I got using Faststone Image Viewer to rename the graphics.
