Windows Update Fails on XP Machine

I just replaced a motherboard in my computer and reinstalled XP Pro. I tried to get on Windows Update, but when I click on the "Express" or "Custom" button it gives me the following message:

Error number: 0x80072EFE

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.


Not sure what's causing this. I reinstalled again just to be sure, but I'm still getting the same message. Nothing else has been installed and I tried updating IE to version 8 and even installing SP2 and SP3 manually, but it still gives the same error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That error seems to be network related.

Was that a repair reinstall or a clean install?
If applicable,
Try a clean install of the WindowsXP.

It was a clean install both times. I have cable internet at my house with a Buffalo router and the other computers can connect to Windows Update just fine. The only odd thing with that computer is that it is connect to a switch because it's in the same room as my Mac computer, so they share a spot on the router through the switch.

I guess I could try just connecting it directly into the router, but I've never had a computer not work with Windows Update just because it was connected through a switch.

I tried hooking the computer directly up to the router today and I'm still getting the same error message. I'm stumped on this one.

How can I update the computer if it won't work with Windows Update?

Ok, so I hooked a USB wireless 802.11b Belkin adapter to the computer and all of the sudden Windows Update works.

So, apparently something is going on with the ethernet card on this motherboard I bought. What would cause it to be able to get on the internet, network with other computers, etc, but not work with Windows Update?

I bought the board from China and I don't know if that would have any effect, since everything else seems to be working fine with it. I updated the BIOS, which didn't help.

It's an Asus A8V deluxe, if that makes a difference.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why this is happening? I'm really stumped and I'd like to use the onboard ethernet adapter, but I guess I could buy a PCI one if I had to.

Go to a Command Prompt, and using the onboard NIC, type "tracert windowsupdate.microsoft.com" without the quotes.

That board is pretty much out of date now. You might try a driver for the Lan Chipset (Marvell 88E8001), from this site ...

I tried those other drivers, Ridgerunner, but they didn't help. I purchased an Encore PCI Gigabit Adapter and installed it today. Now Windows Update works fine.

Still not sure why the onboard LAN wouldn't work with Windows Update when it worked with every other website I tried and the motherboard I replaced was the exact same model and I never had any problems with Windows Update with it.
