I think you meant desktop computer, not CPU. The CPU is a small vital part about 2"x2' that runs the whole shebang.

When you're done with renovation, go to crucial.com, take their memory test, and see if you laptop can tale more memory.

It will tell you if your mobo can take more memory, and what type, and how it's parceled out among the memory sticks. If their prices are too high for your budget, copy the type you need and go shopping online for it. If it can't take more memory, you will always have speed problems with XP.

If you live near a MicroCenter or Frye's you can ignore the online shopping part.
