[RESOLVED] Fire Wire Card
I have had a Fire Wire card in my computer for about 4 years. Yesterday I hooked up my camcorder and it did not recognize it. I checked Device Manager and the 1394 Fire Wire Card is not listed. Where did it go? Do I need a driver again? I do not have a disk for that. It is made by SIIG. 1394 3-Port PCI. Modell NN26XX is the only information in the quick installation guide that I have.
I contacted support and they said I need to take the card out and out it in a different slot and Windows XP sp3 would recognize it. Is this true or is there an easier way.
Here is the response they sent.
It is a known problem with the PCI slots.
The solution is to move the card to other slots until Windows can detect and install its built-in driver for the card.

That is the first thing to try. If you do not have any more ports, unplug and plug it back into the same port about 3 times. Tends to clean the contacts.

And gently clean the contacts with a pencil eraser while you have the card out.
If it was just a driver issue, Windows would still show the card with a yellow splat next to it in Device Manager. If there is nothing at all in DM then it means that Windows is not seeing the hardware at all.

Friday June 11. I took out the Firewire card this morning and cleaned the contacts with a pencil eraser and re-inserted the card again. After booting up the machine again the Firewire card was recognized in Device Manager gain. I did put it back in the same slot since I had no other one to insert it into.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. I am good to go again.
Just wondering why after about 2 years of being in my machine that it suddenly was not detected?

A little bit of oxidation on one of those contacts is all it can take sometimes - when you are only dealing with a couple of volts it doesn't need much resistance to stop the current flowing. That is one of the downsides of having upgradable PCs, those slots are a bit of an Achilles heel
I'm glad you got it sorted out
