    System Image

    If i were to put in a second new hard drive and create a system image on it, would i then be able to use that hard drive with the image and remove the old drive.?

    You're talking about CLONING, not just a system image. An image is a backup file that you use to restore the system.

    What backup application are you using? If you mean the Win7 backup utility, that doesn't have a cloning feature. You would need to make a system image, save it to another place (like an external HD or DVD), then restore the image file onto your new boot drive.

    You will definitely kick off Product Activation if you do that, as the HDD serial is one of the major things that it looks for.
