    Resolved [RESOLVED] Device Manager

I just noticed in my device manager I have in the column going down a item that's listed as unknown. When you click on the little triangle by it a long list of items appear in the drop down with little question marks by them. There's about 50 in the drop down. There are no yellow exclamation marks.

I have fifty items in this unknown drop down list and from the looks of it they pertain to a whole lot of systems. Is there someway to take a picture of this in device manager so I could post it? I guess I'll write them down and start checking them out.

Wow, I've never seen anything quite like that before. Right-click on any one, choose Properties, and let's see what Windows thinks is wrong.

Have you installed the appropriate motherboard chipset drivers for your system?

Honestly, there are a lot of items on that list that I would never expect to see in Device Manager. They are software drivers like Bitlocker, Dynamic Volume Manager, NetBT, HTTP, etc. WTF is "Beep"?

"Beep" is a little program that's been around since DOS days, to sound the system speaker

To make a long story short I had good backups of what I wanted so I just reformatted the computer and in a couple of hours I'll be back to normal. Device Manager is looking like it should. Have no idea how it got like that. There were 51 items in that column. Thanks for all your responses.

I was quite looking forward to getting my teeth into that one!

It looks like all those items are parts of Windows that have a driver component. For some reason, probably a corrupt file somewhere, Windows decided to enumerate them all in DM as if they were hardware devices.

I'm glad you got it sorted out anyway
    Nick.
