I had the exact same problem today and I've spent hours researching and finally fixed it. I'm use IE8. Go into the drop down menu of the search window and select 'manage search providers.' Select Google (Google is set as my default search provider.) The search address should be
"http://www.google.com/search?q=&sourceied=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=&oe="
But mine was showing http://www.google.com/cse?....." plus more stuff
Somehow this search address got corrupted today.
I chose another search engine as my default temporarily. Then I removed google as a search provider. Then go back to the drop down menu to "Find more providers.." Then just add google back in as a provider.
