    is this from norton?
Wouldn't surprise me. You'll be able to tell quickly once you've got rid of it.

If it's Norton 2009 or 2010, the main interface page shows both PC CPU load and a separate meter for Norton itself. Norton 2009 or 2010 runs extremely light on everything I've ran it on or seen it on (very unlike previous editions.)

That said, like many programs, it could bounce the CPU from time to time. But unless something is wrong with the installation (corrupt or something like that), it doesn't peg the CPU and keep it there...

    Avast ???

I JUST downloaded Avast 5 free and am scared now after reading a post asking about which Av to install on a new PC . I was coming here to ask a few questions about it , but now am thinking of uninstalling already.
I just uninstalled AVG using the remover tool recommended by Broni who recommended either Avast or Avira .
Had a very nasty trojan situation and AVG was disabled, etc. and Broni saved the day as always !

Does Avira seem better now that the kinks are (hopefully) worked out ? I see the original thread started in January and it is now March so ...
I certainly don;t want to have to do a clean install and not trust my AV program to give me the right info .
I see there is a box where it says to alert you via email when there is a virus on your pc ??What good is that - weird !

So, should I install Avira or what ? AVG was always so comfortable and ( I thought) reliable but not so sure now since it never caught a thing - only SAS and Malwarebytes were super reliable in that area . Thanks .

IMO, I have never felt AVG was in the same league as all other AV's. Avira is fine and so is Avast (I use Avast.) I think you are making the right move by going to something other than AVG.
