[RESOLVED] No Sound After Moving Computer
Windows XP Pro service pack 3
cpu 2.66 Pentium 4
memory 1 gb
video card radion 7500
M. B. MSI 865PE-Neo3-V (ms-7097) series
Chipset Intel Springdale i865 PE
Plextor CD-R PX-w2410A
In control panel under sounds and audio devices is "realteck AC97 audio
In control panel is multi channel sound manager.
In system in sound, video and game controllers is "audio controllers, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, realteck AC'97 audio, video codecs." It is showing all the devices working.
Things I have tried. Made sure the speakers work by plugging them into another computer. Made sure the speakers were plugged into the green line out plug. Checked all of the volume controls and mixers I could find for muting. Made sure the wire from the plextor to the M.B. was plugged in. I went to the MSI site and checked for the latest drivers. I did install Ubuntu in a windows file. I did go into Ubuntu to make sure nothing was muted and as I said before I did have sound. Any Ideas?

Do you mean by this that you have Ubuntu installed as a virtual machine? If so what virtualisation software are you using? And does the sound work inside the VM?
Nick.

Thanks for the reply! I'm not sure what is meant by virtual machine. You can load the Ubuntu operating system by just running the installation cd in XP and it is like a separate program. There are a couple of other options but I didn't use those. So once you load Ubuntu, when you first start up the computer it gives you the option of Windows XP or Ubuntu. Then it loads the operating system you select.

I'm with you now, that's called a live installation. Does the sound work OK in Ubuntu when you run a live install?

Also you said..
I went to the MSI site and checked for the latest drivers
Did you install/reinstall them? That's the first thing I'd try if you haven't already.

Yes, I reinstalled the drivers and I don't get any sound out of the computer either in xp or Ubuntu. Not even the pc speaker.

Go into BIOS [set up] and make sure the on board is enabled.
If it is enabled, disable, reboot and go back in and re-enable it.

That didn't work. I'm beginning to think I missed something simple or maybe just losing my mind!

Go to Start>Run (or Winkey + R), and type "dxdiag" without the quotes. Run the audio tests and see what that reports.

This is what I get:
sound tab-notes-failure at step19 (user verification of software) HRESUIT=OxOOOOOOOO (error code)
music tab-microsoft synthesizer, realtek AC97 audio, microsoft MIDI mapper and microsoft GS wavetable sw synth all tests were successful.
But there was not sound.

While I'm searching for something more specific, have a read of this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q307918
There seem to have been plenty of people with the same problem, but I haven't found a single solution yet

Check in Device manager in SAFE MODE for multi installs. If they are there, remove all instances of the installs and reboot. Now test.

In "Device Manager" then "system device" there were two "motherboard resources" and in "universal Serial Bus Controllers" there were eight "USB Root Hub" entries. There were no duplicates in "sound, video and game controllers" or any of the other headings. Should I delete one of the "motherboard resources" or any of the USB Root Hub" entries?

Leave the USB alone.
"motherboard resources"
Now that is a new one on me. But if it were mine, I would remove both and then reboot.
Things should reinstall correctly.

I went into safe mode and removed both "motherboard resources". I restarted the computer and checked. Both of them were back!
