    FORGOT WINDOWS LOGON PASSWORD

    DELL Latitude D620
    WinXP Pro

Is there any way to change/cancel my current Windows logon password -- without having to boot into regular mode? -- and avoid having to completely reinstall the OS? I've forgotten the most recent password I assigned : ( My DELL Latitude D620 laptop came back from factory repair and I put in a new password which I've now forgotten, and I can't locate any notes where I documented it : ( So I can go no farther in the boot process than the page that asks me for the password Any way to accomplish a change using the BIOS or safe mode??

    I'm panicked

    Thanks,

    sbuxman

    Am I S.O.L.?

VirtualDr's Acceptable Use Policy does not allow its members to assist anyone in the recovery of lost passwords. Due to the open, public nature of this forum, any assistance given to help circumvent security measures, even for legitimate purposes, would be available for unscrupulous individuals to use for illegitimate purposes. This is a risk that VirtualDr cannot take.

If you have a legitimate need to circumvent a password scheme, please contact the vendor for the software / hardware and request their assistance. E.g. Windows XP password recovery issues should be taken up with Microsoft, Phoenix BIOS password recovery issues should be taken up with Phoenix Technologies, Dell's "this system is protected by a password authenication system" should be taken up with Dell tech support, etc. ...

As you know - laptops are easy to steal. So giving out info on how to hack n crack passwords on an Open to the Public Message Board would make it even better for the bad guys...

But - you can ask your friend Mr GOOGLE....

If you can get into the normally hidden default Admin account, then you can change the passwords of all other accounts from there. The password is what was entered when Windows was first installed (if any). At the Welcome Login Screen hit Ctrl>Alt>Del twice and you'll get a Windows 2000-style login box. Type "Administrator" for the username and whatever password was entered when Windows was first installed (if any). To get to the default Admin account in Home Edition you need to boot into Safe Mode first.

Other than that we cannot help, for the reasons stated.
    Nick.
