Upgrading Celeron D cpu?
I'd like to upgrade the CPU in my father-in-laws PC for him.
his mobo is an ASUS P4S8X-MX.
he's currently running a Celeron D345, what would be a good CPU upgrade that will run on this board?
(I've never been fond of the Celeron chips, I still run my old P4 2.4 and it feels much faster and more stable)

Asus P4PE/L MoBo

Good luck finding a socket 478. The SiS 661 chipset does support Prescotts, so you can look for one of those. You might find an old Northwood on ebay.

Official supported processors listed at ASUS.
Cheers.

Here's the list. I question whether it's really worth it though, IMO the Prescott Pentiums were one of the worst CPU series that Intel ever made

I google'd the mobo last night and found the same information that Shinma referenced and SuperSparks link'd.
looks like the mobo will support:
Socket 478 for Intel Pentium 4/ Celeron
Support Intel Prescott CPU
what processor should I be looking for?
I think this is what he has:
CPU Speed: 3.06 GHz
Bus Speed: 533 MHz
Compatible Processor Socket: Socket 478
Cache Memory: L2 cache - 1 MB
I looked at this chart: All CPU Charts 2004 from Tom's Hardware, but can't find the 3.06 Celeron listed. (best I could find was "Intel Celeron D 2.80 GHz").
Can anyone find this CPU and recommend a better one that will work in this mobo?
(socket 478, Prescott, 800fsb sounds like what I should be looking for(?)

Pentium 4 3.4E is the fastest you can go. I just don't think it's worth doing, you won't notice much difference. Unless you can find one very cheaply.

Did you run CPU-Z to get the CPU info and SSpec number? That would help.

A Celeron with 1MB cache on s478? That doesn't sound right.

nuts, appears to be a fruitless upgrade (I thought it would be easier and cheaper).
searched ePay, Carigslist (nationally, not locally), and Google. no good deals to be found. If I'm going to pay $100 for a new CPU, might as well upgrade to a cheap dual core & mobo. but then I have DDR, IDE, and AGP issues to upgrade.
Nevermind, I don't want to spend $200+ for HIS computer.
I was trying to do him a favor for cheap. He's retired on a fixed-budget, so I was going to pay for the upgrade.
PM me if you have an old Intel P4 socket 345 lying around and we can discuss price.
thanks for the help

Some people would kill for the processing power that a 3gig celeron will deliver
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.
