cd/dvd writer install problems - win xp

    hello,

working with sis-in-laws del dimension 4600.
she mentioned that her cd writer wasnt working

brought over 2 from my house and thought i was going to be able to get away with plugging them in and wiping my hands

the drives dont show up in explorer/my computer
in device manager i get yellow exclamation points

the drives are listed as such:
    _NEC DVD_RW ND-2510A
    CDWRITER IDE1610
(using the microsoft windows driver 5.1.2535.0)

    tried uninstalling and rebooting
got every windows update i could find
searched the web far and wide for drivers for these

im at a loss and im begging to think her OS is responsible.

anyone know where i can get the drivers for these devices or have suggestions on what you would try next?

    thanks in advance!

    running

ill prolly pull another drive out of another computer tonight and try again

Try changing the cable. Most of those Dell computers come with a 40pin/40wire cable and cables can go bad. Get a 40pin/80wire and try that. Also make sure of the jumper setting. Some drives do not like the cable select that Dell uses either.

Do the filters fix. If the executable doesn't work, do the steps manually.

Very common problem. If the system is running Roxio, then even more so.

if a mod could tag this thread 'resolved' that would be wonderful

i have no idea why the 'automated troubleshooter' worked when search windows for a driver wouldnt.

but i could care less, problem solved. thanks again.
