    Microsoft article/link,

Along with suggestions listed by Microsoft, test/check with firewall disabled...
    Cheers.

This might not work, but it's worth a try.

Download Dial-a-Fix and run it. Select the 'Check all' (green arrow) and then hit 'GO.'
Reboot when done and see how things are now.

just went to look at dial a fix, mentioned by crunchy
looks real promising...too good to be true ?
i can't try it for couple weeks, i am working on the problem 'puter
remotely. i should be there to do anything else. i've had no previous
trouble doing remote assist with the citrix[go to assist express] program and windows updates.

    Solution to the problem:-

I simply turned on the Automatic Updates option (was previously off) and rebooted. Microsoft Update now worked.

I turned off Automatic Updates, which is what I want, and Microsoft Update still worked.

    Resolved

yay! i tried that last nite, well, at least your first part.sure 'nuf it worked.
i was not sure about going back to total manual updates,[automatic/off]
    the way i want it.
seems like MS is kind of strong.arming the issue...
watch out for a total block on turning auto. off
we could call this case solved, for now, anyhoo.
