Windows 7 Upgrade

Three question below.
Question 1. I want to help my neighbor out on upgrading from Windows Vista Premium to Windows 7 Premium. I have read that you should check on the Microsoft website for the upgrade advisor first. I have also read that when you do the upgrade there is a choice to do a clean install. Do you need to save all your files etc. as if you were going to re-format your drive to do a clean install.
Any help would be appreciated.

Question 2.Also would the same apply to Windows XP Home?

Question 3. I have a Toshiba Netbook NB205 with Windows 7 Starter. What is the process for upgrading that?

1) Clean install means ALL OLD information will No Longer be there.

2) XP Can not be upgrade...so you are forced to do a clean install

3) Purchase a new/better copy of Win 7...Provided the machine has enough power.

It seems the only versions to do a custom/clean install are the 64bit versions. If the Home Premium is 32 bit you only get the option to upgrade not clean install.

XP you get clean install only.

For clean install, yes, you would need to backup all your files, as clean install formats the harddrive erasing your files in the process.

Windows 7 Starter is in place upgrade only, so your files remain intact.
