Starting my Windows 7 install
OK, I've started my install and the first snag was the USB keyboard was not recognized so I had to hookup a PS/2 keyboard. I'm doing a clean install and replacing Window 2000 pro. The second thing I noticed was the drives are not labeled as C,D,etc. which, in my case, cause a little confusion. I figured out which one was "C" (I think)and formatted. The install is continuing, as I type. I'll post more of my install experience later.
Note: The reason I'm posting my install experience is to help others who are ready to install Windows 7. If anyone has something to add, please do so.

First question: Is the security software provided by Win7 adequate? Or should I D/L some third party software?

I'm using the built in Firewall but not Windows Defender. I've installed Avast a/v and Malwarebytes free to do manual scans every week or so. Whether or not you decide to use Windows Defender, it's not an a/v so you definately need to install one of those.
Windows Defender can't be uninstalled but can be disabled.

jmtjet--If you are running the Win7 install from a disk, I would run it with the connection to the internet off and your firewall and antivirus programs disabled. This way you will not have to worry about security at the installation step.

Once installed you will still need most of the security apps that you are probably now using. Win7 comes with a two way Firewall ( http://www.windowsecurity.com/articl...-Firewall.html ), Windows Defender and some more exotic security apps, but not the usual run of the mill security apps.

Thanks for the replies. Through another post here I found Microsoft Security Essentials and installed it. Seems OK so far.(better than nothing) I'm still using the PS/2 keyboard-haven't switched yet. I'll add Malwarebytes later. So far-so good.

Hope all is going smoothly. FWITSW, I read just today that the free MS Security Essentials is just as good as most any bought software to do the same jobs.
Good luck with the rest of your venture into windows 7 and the installation of it.

I've got my USB keyboard installed and working and I'm quite impressed with Windows Security Essentials. So far the install has been totally painless. Not like the old days when you had to search for hours to find drivers for your peripheral devices. I think Microsoft has taken a tip from Linux and bundled a lot of drivers on the DVD. So far-I'm really liking it.

I like Windows Security Essentials, and it does a good job. Mrs SS got a nasty on a flash drive at university the other day, and I cleaned it up with Security Essentials in a virtual machine with no fuss or bother at all
