    Chrome OS

First....what has happened to VDR? A brand new OS and nobody is spouting off with a completely premature opinion...?

    What's the world coming to?

OK...I'll start. I am very disappointed in what I am hearing from Google on their plans for this operating system. First....it's not an operating sytem, it's just a puffy browser. And it relies almost entirely on cloud computing to become a standard. I still consider clouding to be a throw-back to terminal/mainframe computing, and I KNOW that comparison drives cloud fans nuts.....but it's true.

I really had high hopes for Google to come up with something that was truly going to compete with windows. Not only is this netbook system not it....it appears that Google is going to follow the cloud lead right into their desktop system a few years from now. PC Magazine has an article asking if this new "paradigm" spells doom for the desktop and Microsoft. What?

To be honest....I doubt anyone at MS is quaking in their imported Italian loafers. In fact....a few might even be giggling.

Having just started exploring the Linux world, I can already see there is a huge need between Linux and Windows. Something that would take the best of both. Google was supposed to do this. Anyone else underwhelmed by Google on this project?

Do you trust Google to store all of your data, maintain apps to manipulate it, and be available 24/7/365? I don't. And, for gamers, it is not an option either.

Did not a bunch of folks lose every for their phones?

Darn if I would trust cloud computing after that happened.

Reuters - Google Chrome OS: Everything You Need to Know
    http://www.reuters.com/article/sarah...65808520091121
Google does not have grand ambitions to take over PCs with Chrome. It's a browser and cloud-based OS for netbooks designed to be fast, simple and secure. Chrome will not support hard drives, only solid-state storage, and it will only run Web-based applications. There will be no desktop-type software programs allowed.

The more I read.....I am thinking that a Google-Microsoft battle is not where this is headed. I think Google is going to end up looking more like Apple....and here's why. Google is already dictating a very fine selection of hardware that this OS will run on. Can Google be very far away from producing their own line of hardware....like Macs?

I can forsee a day when you go shopping and see a Google netbook or laptop sitting next to a Apple or HP. None of these makers manufacture all their own parts....they use vendors. So it is not hard to see Google contracting with hardware makers for a specific set-up to run only Google products (like Apple).....and slap the Google name on it. So you will have PC's, Macs and Googles to choose from.

Like the article said, a Chrome OS device sounds like yet another thin client mobile Internet device.
