Question How do I get my computer to detect an external drive?

My repair guys backed up all my stuff on an external drive (USB). I have it connected to a USB port, but it doesn't detect. What else might I have to do? Connect a power port??

Make and model of the drive would help.

Did you ask your "repair guys" about it?

Have a look in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management (or Start>Run>diskmgmt.msc), and tell us what it reports the status of the drive as in there please. Posting a screenshot would be ideal.

    Question External Drive?

Haven't asked them yet, but I will.

    Talking Got it working!!

Well, blow me over. I found a "spare" connector and plugged it into the drive. Must've been the power thingy I needed. At which my computer begins spewing out my backed-up data. It politely asks me what I want to do -- and I opt for "Open Folder to View Files." And that was that.

The drive is now showing itself in "System--Hardware Devices."

    Phoo. I'm good.
