    7 and scanner

    The switch has not been easy, possibly going from Vista and switching to 64 at the same time has added extra hurdles for me - or maybe it's just because I'm not very good with PC's

    Anyway, after the clean install, and many an evening re-installing everything, I thought I was done.... until I remembered I hadn't had to use the scanner yet. I was reminded by a little icon on the taskbar which said it was installing drivers for it - unprompted and yet days after the original install of 7? And it just kept installing, and failing. It's a Canon Lide 90 by the way.

    Started off with the disc that came with it - no go. Tried compatibility options and 'run as administrator' and eventually got most things to load/install but it wouldn't work - didn't see the scanner.
    Downloaded new drivers from Canon and treid them too but as soon as I plug in the USB lead up pops the icon on the taskbar and off it goes, installing until I pull the cable, never getting there, and never actually working.

    How do I clear out all the old drivers? I have uninstalled via the control panel but I wonder if there's old stuff left? Any suggestions?

    Are you sure you downloaded the 64bit drivers?

    Sorry. I certainly didn't mean it in that context. I only asked because of my own stupid experience.

    OK, so you've made sure everything "Canon" is gone from Control Panel / Programs and Features. Next, let's make sure the drivers are uninstalled.

    Open the Device Manager and expand the section that contains your scanner (chances are it's already expanded with a yellow triangle). Right click on your scanner and select uninstall. Make sure the scanner is unplugged and reboot. Run the 64bit setup with the scanner still unplugged until you're prompted to connect it.

    OK TB, thanks for that, had a look round device manager and there is nothing there at all for any scanner - wonder if that's good or bad? I'm assuming it's good and that it means there are no left over bits of driver....
    I'll try the file again and report back.

    You had the scanner connected when you looked to uninstall the drivers, correct?

    A scanner should show in DM under "Imaging Devices", and only when the scanner is switched on. However, it probably only shows there if the drivers were correctly installed in the first place. So what you need to do, is to go to the Command Prompt in All Programs>Accessories, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator", then at the prompt type "Set devmgr show nonpresent devices=1" without the quotes. Once you've done that, go to Device Manager, and in the View menu, select "Show hidden devices". Then hunt down all instances of those drivers and uninstall them.

    OK that didn't go too well. It looked like it installed ok but as soon as I plugged in the USB cable the little green ball was whizzing round the icon on the taskbar saying it was installing drivers! 20 minutes later I pulled it out.
    The attached screen shots may help show you what happens -
    Publisher finds the scanner but then gives the error message. Device manager finds it now too (before your post SuperSparks) but says on first tab that there are no drivers, but on the second shot, if I click update drivers, it lists lots

    Sorry. I'm running out of ideas. What happens when you click the 'Update Drivers' button and navigate to your downloaded drivers (you may have to extract them to a folder)?

    I stumbled upon that very thought, but I can't seem to extract them to a folder I have netzip too but it won't seem to extract it..

    Run the downloaded EXE again and take note to see if it created a folder structure.....

    Also, WinRAR may be able to extract it.

    Thanks, WinRar did the trick, unfortunately even running it uncompressed made no difference. Also there doesn't seem to be the option via the 'suggested fixes' route to tell it where to look so it just churns away for ages and then says it can't find any drivers
    Also the update driver box has gone too... I think I'll die of old age before I get this system set up properly

    Turns out they don't have a 64bit version.... yet!!

    Cannon Support emailed back to say there was no 64bit driver for Windows 7 released yet, although it would be supported eventually?
    I'll try the one you've linked but I suspect it'll be the same as the one I downloaded before.... fingers crossed.
