Watch the bottom LEFT when the page is loading.
See what the hang up is.

It usually says it is transferring data from a website. I have also notices that if I get fed up with waiting and close firefox and try to reopen it, I get a window that tells me it is currently running and if I check the processes in the task manager, there it is taking resources even though it is not open.

Those are the ad-servers that are poorly set up causing those delays.
MSN is redoing their pages, so hopefully things will get better.

Does the same delay ('never finish loading a page') happen with Firefox running in Safe-mode?Close Firefox, wait a few seconds, then click Start > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode) Firefox is slow to close all the way. (It's saving 'stuff' to disk). You have to wait a few seconds (10-15 maybe) before attempting to reload it.

I've tried opening firefox in safe mode (not PC, just firefox) and it doesn't perform any better. I have tried disabling the extensions one at a time and those don't seem to be the culprit either. It must just be the interaction between firefox and that PC, which runs XP. My Vista machine is running the same version and it is fine. But the bottom line is that it used to work great. I totally abandoned IE7 once i tried firefox. Now I am reconsidering. Is IE8 supposedly stable? does it have add-ons like firefox?

I removed Firefox and then re-downloaded it. It's better, although I still have issues with some sites. Even as I type this, I can see the tab indicate that it is loading this page and the page (tab) that preceded it. It's like it never fully finishes loading a page. The green bar on the bottom right is never quite full.
I use an antivirus and two spyware detectors on a regular basis and don't seem to have anything weird going on. As much as I dislike Vista, the PC that runs on that system using the very same build of Firefox loads pages very quickly and with zero problems.

Found this is the Mozilla forums. I had the same experience as this man including upgrading my AVG. His advice seems to fix the problem.

Thanks for posting the link.
Seems AVG has another fiasco on their hands.

Train, I have been using the free version of AVG for years and found it to be very reliable. I had not heard of any issues they have had , as you are implying. If not AVG, what anti-virus program do you recommend?

I was fine up to version 8, but since then, because of the problems posted here in vdr, we have stopped recommending it. There are others, like you who are still use it seem not to have problems.
Avira free, I use on my laptops, and the free version of Avast are what we recommend now.
Just remember to remove AVG you need to use the AVG removal tool.
