Automatic updates

How do I stop automatic updates from installing? I have it set to ask before they install so I can choose what I want to install. Sometimes when I shut down I get a message that says I can click here to shut down without installing updates. The next time I long on they have installed. I notice it when I keep getting a message that says windows needs to restart in order to finish installing the updates. How can I stop this?

Also I keep getting a lot of "program not responding" messages. What causes this?

you can disable the automatic updates service in the control panel - administrative tools - services.

I'm assuming that you plan to actually do the updates at a later time. At which, you would re-enable the service.

If you choose the second one in the updates list, you will be notified with a yellow shield on your task bar with a popup telling you updates are available. You can click the 'X' on the popup window to close it. Then go to the windows update site from the 'tools' menu on a web page. It will then check to see what you have offered and you can choose which ones to dn/load. If you don't want one,click the lil' box next to it to remove the check.

Ok thanks guys. I will give it a try. I just don't like the idea when I don't want a certain update it installs after I log on.

Forgot one thing about the update page. Choose 'custom' to be able to uncheck ones you don't want.

I was under the impression that you tried the different auto update settings. Disabling the service will definitely prevent it from running.

pennydog--I have Automatic Updates in the Security Center set to "Notify me but do not download or install".
I get the shield in the Taskbar (to "Notify me"), but I can choose when to go to the WinUpdate site to download and install. It also means that I do not get any nags on shutdown and the PC will not automatically shut down when an Update that needs to be restarted is installed. The last can be important if you are in the middle of something which will be erased on a restart.

I have it to notify me but not download or install. I get the shut down without installing updates at shutdown but then when I log on the next time they have automatically installed, even tho I told it not to. I understand the importance of updates, but I like to be able to choose those I want and install when I want.
