    External Hard drive

How can I safely remove my external hard drive. When I right click on it the option to safely remove is not there?

you mean when you right-click on the tray icon? I normally LEFT click and then choose the device i want to unmount.

The device is grayed out in the task bar,so I clicked on computer and then right clicked on the drive and the safely remove drive is not there. I used the eject and was able to remove it that way.

In Device Manager, right-click on the drive, and choose Properties. Then in the Policies tab, see if it is set for "Quick removal", or "Better performance". If "Quick removal" is selected you don't get a safely remove option, you can just go ahead and do it, but at the expense of some performance.

It was set to Quick Removal and I set it to better performance, if that isn't right correct me. When I click the safely remove icon in the system tray, I have eject Free Agent Drive. That should do it I hope. Sparks if you have sometime would you please go to Windows 7, I posted a problem there.

OK, you now have it set as default, and all should be well again

You said it was set as default, does that mean my main drive C is no longer the default drive?

No, I meant that changing it back to "Better performance" is the default setting. Sorry to confuse you.

You disconnect it to early one time and you stand a real good chance of losing everything on that external.

Shall we say "Learned the hard way!".
