cannot change folder attributes Win 2003 Server

    Hello folks,

I need your help with a problem. I recently setup a new server for the non-profit I work for. Everything is working great until we try to access some files on the server then we get a read only prompt. I have tried to change the read only attributes through the properties settings on the folders the files are in to no avail it just keeps returning to read only, also the file is not read only. I have tried reading a few work arounds on MS web site by using the attrib cmd but still no success.I have also tried sharing and permissions and ownerships settings in computer management. I would gladly accept and try any suggestions you might have to solve this inconvience.

    Thank you

How are your share and ntfs permissions set up? Remember that the result is the MOST restrictive between the two. I normally allow everyone full shared permissions, then lock it down with NTFS permissions.

I have checked and everyone has full access. I am not sure about NTFS settings will check that and post back thanks for the response. Okay I cannot figure out where to set NTFS settings.

When you right click on a folder, there is a Sharing tab and a Security tab. The Security tab is NTFS.

Are the users in multiple groups? You need to check the group restrictions also.

I have the group and user settings in NTFS all set with check marks, but the boxes seem to be grayed out. Does that make a difference because I cannot uncheck the boxes in this menu. Thanks

Okay I think I have found the problem. I adjusted the NTFS settings on the drive that holds the folders and we no longer are prompted with read only messages when accessing files. Thanks for your suggestions Midknyte you helped me think outside the box . It still kind of makes we wonder why it is we cannot remove read only settings on folders by removing the check mark under folder properties, but that is a quest for another time maybe.

If you'll look on ANY pc from Win XP up - all folders "appear" to be marked read only
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

If the boxes are grayed out, that means the permissions are being inherited from a parent folder.
