[RESOLVED] Can't clear unwanted icon from desktop

Acertravelmate 5520, Vista on the Acer Platform.

I can't clear an unwanted icon from the desktop.

The Icon is that for downloads from a site called ' Classical Archives ' where for a fee one can download music. I intend stopping my subscription having downloaded all the music that I require.

I have uninstalled the program, run the remove unwanted icons function but the icon refuses to go to the recycle bin. I get a message to the effect that ' the program is still in use and the action cannot be carried out '

Of course the site is mentioned in many files around my machine, and when I do a search there are many references including the site title. The program however does not remain


Can someone please help me to get rid of the Icon ?

Sometimes a simple reboot of the pc - drag icon to recycle bin will undo the file in use message.

Next time use something like Revo uninstaller to remove the application.

The reboot and drag didn't give joy. The link revealed a message to the effect that ' microsoft believe that this site may cause damage in opening your files to general access ' so I decided to close immediiately.

Any further suggestions will be welcome

Something wrong there. http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ works fine for me and is a well regarded program, though there is a screenshot of an error message at the top to show the problem Unlocker should fix.
Have you looked into MSCONFIG to see if that program is listed as running?
Or used Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896653.aspx
Perhaps you have malware?

I followed your links ,I ran Spyware Doctor and AVG still got the same mesage re: the first link. Saw no reference to classical archives in the second link, process explorer, or in msconfig.

I don't want to go to the extreme and do a restore...so perhaps I will have to live with the unwanted thing tucked away in the corner of the desktop.......everything else is running fine so I hesitate to make any major change.

IE8 is reporting the site as unsafe, though Firefox doesn't. I'm fairly sure it's a false positive, that is a well known and respected program, as Welshjim says. I'll see if I can find olut what's going on.

Have you tried to take ownership of that icon file?

Have you scanned with antimalware programs such as your antivirus program, MalwareBytes and SuperAntispyware?

Except for that piriform link posted above (which may explain everything), the results and the message you report seem suspicious. What is the exact wording of the message to the effect "microsoft believe that this site may cause damage in opening your files to general access"?

The experts have solved a problem again !

I tried several of the links provided and eventually Unlocker revealed the culprit which was Acer NTI Shadow.

I was settling down to putting up with the culprit...but now no need.

Things such as this are such a hurdle to the intermediate computer user and its great to be able to call on such a magical fund of knowledge.
