    Ports quit working

A friend has asked my help on this problem. I'd welcome Virtual Dr. advice on where to begin. ... wdc

    Gary problem

The computer problem I spoke of is on my computer with windows XP home edition. Two ports have stopped working. One is the USB port that accommodates thumb drives/travel drives, and one is the port that accepts compact flash drives (like from my camera). The compact flash drive quit maybe a year ago. The other one gave up a week or so ago. Both worked one day and failed to work the next day. I have tried to vacuum out any dust but that didn't help.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the chipset drivers.

SuperSparks: Thank you for fielding my post.

I'm afraid I am not familiar with term "chips set." Could you please elaborate a little? How do I get to the chip set (a group of files, I presume) to remove them and then reinstall them?

... the term chipset often refers to a specific pair of chips on the motherboard: the northbridge and the southbridge. The northbridge links the CPU to very high-speed devices, especially main memory and graphics controllers, and the southbridge connects to lower-speed peripheral buses (such as PCI or ISA). In many modern chipsets, the southbridge actually contains some on-chip integrated peripherals, such as Ethernet, USB, and audio devices. A chipset is usually designed to work with a specific family of microprocessors. Because it controls communications between the processor and external devices, the chipset plays a crucial role in determining system performance.

The manufacturer of a chipset often is independent from the manufacturer of the motherboard. Current manufacturers of chipsets for PC-compatible motherboards include NVIDIA, AMD, VIA Technologies, SiS, Intel and Broadcom. ...
