Different motherboard using the old Hard Drive

    Old system / background:

HP Compaq Presario S6700CL WinXp Pro - purchased in '05
Motherboard dies in May, placed entire system on shelf, to collect dust.

Last week, my son and I decide to rebuild it using a brand new
ASUS K8V-MX motherboard instead of the original ASUS K8N8X-LA.
The new board posts fine, recognizes all hardware.

The Hard drive from the old machine tries to load WinXp, fails, and system reboots. I assume because there is a bios marker not present, or incorrect.

Is there any way to work around and load the former WinXp, or should we simply wipe the HD and start over?

No, the difference in the motherboard drivers is the cause, so do a repair install and then install the new drivers.

The reason it fails is because the motherboard is different. You need to just reload xp. Even if you tried to do a repair install that would not work unless the xp cd you have is a retail version not the HP recovery disk.

The HAL changes when you switch motherboards.

Thanks so much to you all. This was a good learning project for my son. As always, I can count on you guys (and gals) to provide options and solutions. I don't post much, as I find you can learn a lot just by reading.
