paranoia zoneAlarm server
I was installing the KB updates from MS.
last one was KB 953297 had to do with NET framework.
and it asked to be a server. denied no less than 4 times
allowed to go internet NOT SERVER.
message came back as Not installed.
Why is a KB asking to to be server?
All my server side is questions mark (?) or X X

An application is acting as a server if it accepts a connection that it has not originated a request for (the client makes the request, the server responds). The firewall normally blocks any connection that is not a response to a request from a trusted application on the client side. If an application wants to be able to receive an unsolicited connection, it requests to act as a server. In the case of a system update, if it is necessary during the process for the Microsoft server to initiate a connection the installer application hasn't requested, it will be allowed. The number of Google hits for this update failing to install makes me suspect this may be due to people's firewalls automatically denying the installer's request to act as server.
A rule of thumb for allow server requests in response to an action you have initiated is deny initially, if the action you initiated fails, then the request appears to be genuine and can be allowed on that occasion.

Platypus.-
I used your idea, "allowed internet and server" in ZoneAlarm.
I figured the same as you, allow it to install, than change back to ASK (?)
But, it still failed to install.
Now its my turn to be puzzled.
