    RAM question

I have a mobo with 2GB RAM (1GB X2). The exact specs on the memory on the computer is:

    2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 3AXT6400C5-2048K.

The mobo has two slots available.

Now I got 2 sticks of 512MB each that came out of another computer. I am reading the label on the memory and it says the following:

    512MB 1Rx8 PC2 - 4200U - 444 - 12 - D1

    Here are my questions:

    1) Is this memory compatible with my mobo?
    2) Can I mix and match with what is on there already (to make it a total of 3gb)
    4) since the speed on the existing memory is 6400, is putting in 4200 really beneficial because I know that it will use the lowest speed.

    Thank you!

PC4200 is 533MHz. It may be possible, but I wouldn't recommend it. The system may not boot and even if it does, you are handicapping it.

It would help if you gave system specs other than just the ram. CPU and motherboard would be a start.

If your interested in upgrading your RAM I wouldn't use the extra RAM you have I'd spend $20-$25 and buy the right type. Here is a link for some Kingston RAM with the right specs for $20.99:

Mizing brands of ram can lead to:
    1. can not boot up.
    2. cause hair pulling errors.
    3. Work just fine.

Guess what 2 are most common happening. . .

You could just go back to Newegg and buy another set of the same RAM for $33.99; 2 x 1gb giving you 4gb instead of 3gb. I know a 32bit system can only use 3.2gb of the 4gb but an extra gb is only $10 more and one of these days you might just switch to a 64bit OS.
