Power Options Problem…..My PC has other plans
I’m running Vista Ultimate x64 and XP Pro x32 on a new X58 Intel Desktop with a RAID array using 2) Western Digital Raptor hard drives:
--One at 150 GB (the XP drive)
--The other is a newer Velociraptor at 300 GB (the Vista Drive and the problematic one, I should add)
As fast as this machine is, the scans still can take several hours and I’d like to be able to start em, set the Kaspersky Full Scan and/or Object scan to shut down when completed…..hopefully when I’m asleep.
This is not working worth spit and as far as I know……never has.
There have even been occasions after we repaired Vista here on another thread, that I know the machine was turned off, I woke up at around 3:00 AM to take care of business, and it’s on.
It’s kinda like the attack of the machines

No matter what time frame I set my hard drives to shut down, same with my monitor…..I can easily come back several hours later, and the scans didn’t complete because the HD had shut down and the monitor goes to sleep mode (I think) after about 45 minutes.
I have several cases I could conceivably use with Microsoft, thought I would check virtualdr before I use one.
There’s a world of expertise right here, and I might even get a chuckle along the way.

Thanks for any suggestions…….as usual.

Just guessing here.
Maybe you need to turn the modem off.
Have you disabled wake on lan and the like in the bios?
Never tried the shutdown like you want.

I think wake on lan *is* the issue here Train
This is not my forte' Train or anyone else who spots this and cares to join in.
I have been all over the BIOS on this Asus Rampage and I'll be dammed if I can find that buddy.
If I looking for love in all the wrong places ..... again, give me a hint on where I might find that if you find a sec, would you Please?
The fellow who did the BIOS for me on this build is gone for the weekend or I'd ask him.
As I recall in a phone conversation, he mentioned that too.
If I need to run a case with Asus I can do that.
I've worn out the google key and searched all over the knowledge base on this Asus mobo.
The buzz word seems to be: WOL, when searching.

What seems so simple to other people really baffles this guy in the BIOS.
I can't chance turning this danged DSL modem off.
At least 40% of the time when I've done that, something needs to be reset, and that takes an hour or better and being treated like some small child.

It may not be exactly "Wake on LAN". Look for things like:- Power up on PCI/PCIE devices
- Power on by external modem
- Power up by PS/2 mouse
- Power up by PS/2 keyboard
- Power on by RTC alarm
- Restore on AC power loss

Doc Thanks.
I can find things in the BIOS (that's where I'm supposed to be looking.....right?) like you described.
I'm learning how to back that up, and I'd have to say that this mobo was worth every single $.01 that I dreaded spending on it.
Asus has a winner on this one and that procedure is relatively simple.
But I digress as usual.
Once or if I locate those things.....should I disable em or what?

I hate the thought of testing anything in there.
In between posts on this thread.......my monitor will turn to screensaver in 15 minutes no matter where I set the power options in CP using Vista x64.
Anyone else who wants to chime in....be my guest.

It's your choice. If the PC is off, do you want it to Power up on PCI/PCIE devices, and/or by external modem and/or by PS/2 mouse or keyboard, etc., etc.?

Power on by external modem
That would either be through the lan or a external dial up modem.

Thanks gentlemen.
This has gone on tooo long & last night about crashed the XP side of my RAID array because Kaspersky had this gi--Hugeuous update that kept failing.

I'm gonna have to go waaaay out on a limb and (gulp...$wallowed) pay to have this corrected.
I'll post back what the technician finally does so no one else here has to go thru this annoyance.

The solution was too simple to elaborate.
I'm humiliated by these danged machines once again.
The answer was in.....Power Mgmt. > Advanced.

Surf safe & have some fun.
