It's taking SOOOO long!
Hi there,
Really don't know what I am doing wrong.
Converted a 7 gb mkv file with Super to mpg and the lip sync was out.
So am now trying again with Any Video Converter. It took about 6 hours for the first pass and I left the computer running overnight, set to hibernate after 4 hrs, during the second pass. The computer hibernated with the second pass at 47%. Am continuing the process now.
But I don't understand why this is taking so long? I only want to put a 7gb file onto a 4.7gb DVD.
Really grateful for any insights.

How much free RAM do you have available? Your file is 7GB.
Generally speaking, computers do their work in RAM (memory). When there isn't enough room in RAM to work on an entire file, they are forced to use the hard drive as RAM. And even the fastest hard drives are many times slower than RAM.
Also, which CPU are you running? 1.8 GHz Celeron or a Core i7-975 Extreme?

Thanks for the reply.
I have 3gb of RAM under XP Pro. I don't think xp sees all the RAM. However, there are two CPUs, Core 2 6300, 1.8ghz.
I think one of the problems is that I copied the mkv file to one partition and converting it to another. Unfortunately, both partitions are on the same drive!
The conversion has finally finished and although the mpg file looks OK, the subtitles have been hard coded and are so large that the film is almost unwatchable.
I'll try again.

If conversion involves NTSC to PAL or vice versa,
Time stated is not unusual.
Partition locations should not be a factor.
I have not encountered any issue when using ConvertXtoDVD in above described partition scenario.
Cheers.

Don't know if the program makes a difference, but tonight I converted again, from mkv on partition E: to mpg on a different hd. Used Prism video converter and it only took the length of the film, ie. 120 mins.
And so to the next issue!
The quality of the mpg looks good but there is a time stamp error. The sound is about 3 seconds out of sync. Looking at the original mkv, I would say the sound was about 0.5 second out of sync.
Is there a way to correct this given that all the files are within the mkv?

If you cross the ide controller, then yes it will be much faster than to a partition on the same hdd or ribbon.
