Trouble Keeping settings
I have a couple small issues that started after we did all the scans and removed Trojans.
The settings on the keyboard and the mouse will not stay set, each time we log on we have to go to control panel and reset everything. Also the usb drive will not start automatically any longer, we have to manually start it.
How can I fix these so they keep the settings? Thanks.
We run
Win XP, DSL, IE, Avira

pennydog--You may still have some leftover bits of the trojans. HiJackThis would help you find them. http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-...-10227353.html
If you need help in interpretation of the log post it in the HiJackThis forum.
But you could also, as a relatively quick step, run SFC /SCANNOW from a command prompt. That will replace any missing or corrupted operating system files. You may be asked for the WinXP CD so have it handy.

Thanks Welshjim. I posted all the scans including the hijack this log on the other forum. It was all clear of anything.
Where do I run the sfc/scannow from?

Actually you do not need to do it "from a command prompt"
Just Start|Run, type sfc/scannow and hit OK. Have the CD handy.

I tried to do the scannow thing and it says cannot find the file. I typed it exactly as you have it above.

It should be sfc /scannow with a space before the forward slash.

pennydog--Sorry about SFC /SCANNOW. (I had it right the first time, but thereafter I just copied from your post. Thanks to SuperSparks for correcting things.)
I thought of something else that could affect settings not being saved.
Windows by default saves only so many personalized settings. Once that number is exceeded it will save no more.
You can increase that number. The simplest way is to use TweakUI for XP. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx
Once installed click Explorer|Customizations in the left panel. In the right panel change the number in the Folders to Remember line to 2000 or more. (You are just using a little hard drive space.) Then Apply|OK.
You can also do it from the Registry http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813711
But Tweak is easier, I think.

Ok thanks Jim. The mouse is not holding settings but the keyboard did. I will use the TweakUI when I get home.
We also have an issue now with auto open, when we use a thumb drive or camera media it used to pop up and say open with, now we get nothing. Will this be the same issue as the other settings?
Thanks.

pennydog--
Concerning "thumb drive or camera media ":
WhereWhen did you used to see "Open With"? Where/What settings (that TweakUI may help) did you try to make?
I presume these are USB devices. Even if you do not see "Open With", do these devices show in My Computer when plugged in? If so, do they function when clicked?

Yes they are USB drives and normally when we plugged them in a small window popped up that said Open With and inside that window would be the items to open the device with. That no longer shows up. Yes it will open when we click on the drive directly, but just easoer to use the opo up box to open the media.
Tweak UI did help in keeping the setting to the keybaord and mouse. Thanks for the help.
