Resolved [RESOLVED] Practice what I preach..

Yep...recently I passed along the statement that " The only stupid question is the one that you don't ask".

    Well, here goes.

I keep reading that sata hdd's need drivers installed from a floppy or usb stick...etc. Now, I have ( have had from the beginning), a sata hdd and when I built my system, I didn't do that...wasn't asked for the drivers or anything.

Is it just some boards that require that, or what?

My bios is set to auto detect sata drives. so is that why I didn't have to install drivers?

Everytime that I read a thread about sata hdd's and the need to load drivers from a floppy, I always wonder about my situation.

Is it possible for a sata hdd to be run like an ide hdd...in other word, at ide speeds and performance levels?

    So...these are my "stupid" questions....

Most mobo's do not have that setting, thus they need the floppy, etc. in order to add the SATA drivers.

    Yah lucked out.

thanks, Train. That is what's kinda odd...my board is a s754 board..probably 5 or 6 years old...and it has sata hdd detect...but some ( sems like a lot) of the new(er) boards do not have sata detect?

Sata has been around for several years and it doesn't make any sense, and since IDE drives are becoming fewer & fewer, if the newer boards aren't made to auto detect sata hdd's. What's up with that? Most new boards only have one IDE connection and have lots of sata.

I just had this crazy thought maybe my sata hdd was not operating at sata levels but somehow only operating at ide levels.

You are right, some boards are easier to work with than others.
Money probably is involved and the bean counters are screaming DO NOT PAY.

    So we suffer.
