USB
Train
I did a PC-doctor check and they are fine. Now quite often I hear a beep [up sound] and a beep [down sound] that tends to turn the USB device on and off. This in turn turns the CD and DVD, [along with other items attached to the USB] to go on and off. Confusing! Question might be: What controls the USB device to make it irratic.

USB Problem
train, [or other moduator]
How can the CPU [HP 1500, 512 RAM, XP, SP3] turn the USB port{s} off and on [apparently] by it self. The system will ding and the port works. Ding again, and the port fails to work. Confusing. [on the front of the HP1500 are min slots for camera, etc]

In VirtualDr member's "Bill Heffner"'s case, the erratic "beep [up sound] and a beep [down sound]" was because of a break in his USB mouse cable. See this thread:

Check the properties of each hub, power management tab.
Are they set to be shut down to save power.

I looked into the possibility that a line was broken as suggested. This is more internal then external. Again, what turned the USB on and off to cause this problem. I have read most of the informaton concerning this problem, but still linger on it.

Got a spare hdd handy?
That way you do not touch your present hdd.
About now is when I would try a clean install and see what happens.
