Resolved [RESOLVED] Trying to put IE7 back... IE8 is installed

    Gentlemen:

'Setup cannot continue because of newer version'

I have removed the IE8updates in Add/Remove, no good.

I've tried running spuninst.exe - won't run because of missing .dll

    Thanks - rev

    The OS is XP SP3

    Found it...

If removing IE8 Updates doesn't work and IE8 disappears from the list in Add/Remove you can run this at the cmd prompt:

    %windir%\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe

It warns you about possible instability due to updates that may have been installed after IE8 (click Yes) - then it rolls you back to whatever version you had before.

It worked for me and I haven't noticed any instability. 7 is faster and doesn't wobble.

Reverend--Sometimes a System Restore is the best way to minimize bits and pieces of IE8 being left behind.

    Jim:

I thought of that but I don't trust it! Restore to when? How do you know the exact state you're restoring to, and if it does its job properly?

    Reverend--
    Restore to when?
    To a date/time before IE8 was installed.
How do you know the exact state you're restoring to
System Restore is essentially a backup of the Registry which Windows should perform every day or so. So you are restoring the Registry to how it was before installing IE8.
if it does its job properly?
Well, there are programs to compare the Registry at different times, but it has been a long time since I have used them.
    Have faith, Reverend.

Oh Jim I am of little faith, it's true. It comes from living this long and seeing the things I've seen.
