    firmware upgrade for lite-on 1633s

    Hi,

I am trying to upgrade my lite-on DVDRW SOHW-1633S. I went to there site and downloaded the file for Windows XP file sp26570 and followed the instructions using a floppy. I then got a message that said"Lite on IT XFlash utility for DOS v1.6.1 no matched drive." Why am I getting something in DOS? Is there a different file I should get? Any help would be appreciated.

    Windows XP professional
    service pack 3
    pentium 4 2.66GHz
    1000 gb RAM

    Double check model.
You can try firmware(s) available from the manufacturer of the DVD burner instead of system manufacturer.
    Cheers.

Many re-flashing utilities run from DOS, try booting up with a Win98 or ME startup floppy, and see if it runs. You can get one from here:

    Thanks for the replies!

I used Everest and it directed me to a site where I downloaded a file called DR16BSOY. It said this replaces DR16BSOK. So I ran it and it worked. Unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem with burning DVD's but at least my burner is updated thanks to you!

Saturday's coming and it will be time for "As Time Goes By" which has been running in Portland, Oregon since the mid 90's.

    Considering age of the LITE-ON,
Would not be unusual for drive to be defective.

Try cleaning the drive lens with a cleaning disc. You can get one from any music or electronics store if you don't have one already.

I wasn't meaning to drag another problem into the picture. My Children gave me Roxio Creator2009 (I'm old) and I was communicating with their "tech support" (completely unlike Virtual Dr. by the way). When I installed Roxio I copied a DVD and it worked. I tried copying another one and it didn't work and that's when they told me to upgrade the Px eng., the firmware and turn off everything in msconfig. This again worked for one DVD and not a second one. I am waiting for their "words of wisdom" on what to do next. But, if cleaning the lense or getting a new burner would be a better solution I should do that. I could pay for it with the money I would save on coasters.

    Thanks)

I have not had much succes with Roxio software from version 6 on. You could try a cold boot, then burn one disc, and if that succeeds, shut down and cold boot again and try another. If that works, I would suspect a software issue. You could also try a free CD / DVD burning program. If that works, then your hardware is OK.

    Thanks for the reply!

I downloaded CDBurner and burned one DVD successfully. I ended the program and tried the DVD and it worked. I opened CDBurner and tried to burn another DVD and it failed. So what you are telling me is I have a defective burner?

    Thanks

If you able to burn one DVD successfully, but subsequent DVDs fail to be created correctly, then it is likely a software issue. If you shut down the system, and cold boot it, and you can again burn one DVD successfully, that would seem to indicate that the DVD drive hardware is OK.

I already know if I burn one DVD I cannot burn another one successfully. So I opened Roxio and burned a DVD successfully. I then turned off the computer after closing all the programs and waited 30 seconds or so. Then I turned the computer back on and opened Roxio. I tried burning another DVD and it was unsuccessful. I'm assuming that's what you mean be "cold booting".

Correct. If a DVD creation failed after a cold boot, then I'm out of ideas as to what is causing the problem. The only other test you could try would be to connect the drive to another system to see if the same thing happens. If it does, then it might be time for a new drive. Or, you could just get a new drive and try that. It would probably cost less than the time you have already spent trying to diagnose the issue.

That's what I'm thinking. The same thing happened when I tried the free program CDBurner. Thanks for all the help!

Purchased a new burner and it did the same thing. Burned one DVD and would not burn another one

Sorry to hear that. In that case, the next thing to try would be a clean install of Windows. If that doesn't work, then it may be a motherboard / controller issue.
