    Audio drivers.

Hello. I am trying to get the audio to work on an AMD athlon xp (Win98, specs. below). I've installed the correct drivers for the onboard audio, and there appears to be no conflicts. I've tried to install/uninstall several times (safe mode, removing other audio components, enabling in BIOS, etc.) without success. Anyone have an idea? Thanks.

Yes, it's all grayed out, and states that "no devices" are available. It doesn't seem to be detecting the audio at all. With a sound board, I could unplug, and plug back in to let it read; however, this is built into the motherboard. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Disable in Bios, save and exit.
    Re-enter and enable.

It didn't work, the options are 'auto' and 'disabled'. I also disabled/enabled some other similar settings. Would flashing the BIOS help?

    I kind of doubt it.

Maybe time to get a card is my guess.

How did you actually uninstall/reinstall, if:
    - "no devices" are available
    - it's all grayed out

In device manager, under 'sound, video and game controllers', it lists 'realtek ac'97 audio for via (r) audio controller' (no conflicts). But under 'multimedia' and 'sounds' in control panel, it's all grayed out and unclickable. I uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers and the listing in device manager.

If you sure, you installed correct drivers, there is a good chance, sound chip is dead.

That is possible. I've got all the other drivers and hardware working. It's just the audio that's giving me the trouble, after installing a new hard drive (old used one I had, good working condition) in the system that's running win98.

    Realtek ac'97 driver, (v4.06) I tried the win95 version, but it wouldn't install. It's a VIA VT8235 chipset.

I got the drivers from the actual manufacturers site: http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=do...=1&prod_no=527

If so, I'd say, audio chip is busted.
