MS announced their pricing for the various versions today as detailed in the enclosed article. Plus there is a limited time discounted offer for pre-orders.

Upgrade to Windows 7
Would anyone know if you actually have to have Vista on your PC, or serials are sufficient? (I removed Vista and running Windows 7 RC) Also a PC with an OEM version of Vista (in my case it's installed by Dell) would be eligible for upgrade?
Thanks for your help.

I would guess that you must produce a valid copy of Vista during the Windows 7 Upgrade version installation process for the system to read/check. I haven't heard or read anything about a pre-requirement to actually have Vista installed, but MS is always full of surprises. As for OEM versions, I know that HP is offering a free upgrade to Win 7...I would expect Dell to have something similar. However...I'm sure there is a purchase date limitation in there somewhere.
Interesting pricing...doesn't look like there is enough difference between Pro and Ultimate to justify an extra 100 smackers.
Edit: come to think of it....you probably DO have to have Vista installed AND activated...it would be too easy to use someone else's CD copy to take advantage of the Win 7 Upgrade.

Never cared for them myself...full Pro edition for me.
Now watch...MS will have not learned from its mistakes and will later release some super-spiffy program that is compatible with the Ultimate version only....and tick off half of the world's population once again.

Windows 7's "XP Mode" only works in the Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate version's of Windows 7.
Note that in order for your PC to be able run "XP Mode", 1) the CPU must support Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) or AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) ... A-n-d, 2) this Virtualization support must be Enabled in the BIOS.
GRC's free, tiny, standalone utility, "SecurAble" can tell you if your processor supports Virtualization:

See? They are at it again....
From the blog:
Finally, as a way of saying thank you to our loyal Windows customers, we are excited to introduce a special time limited offer! We will offer people in select markets the opportunity to pre-order Windows 7 at a more than 50% discount. In the US, this will mean you can pre-order Windows 7 Home Premium for USD $49.99 or Windows 7 Professional for USD $99.99. You can take advantage of this special offer online via select retail partners such as Best Buy or Amazon, or the online Microsoft Store (in participating markets).
A bit deceiving....the discount is for the UPGRADE versions only.
PSYCH!!!!

Question--With Vista I got the Upgrade version and was able to do a fresh install by doing an install and not entering the key, then do another install and entering the key. Wonder if this will work with Windows 7?

Newegg is one of their authorized retailers. They are selling Vista Premium 64 bit for $110, including a free upgrade to Windows 7 Premium. If you just want Windows 7 premium, this might be the way to go. Buy Vista now, instal when Win7 comes out and do an immediate upgrade. This is limited time offer.

I'll buy myself the OEM Ultimate version. I did get the email "thanks for beta testing.. 50% off.. blah blah blah".. but it's only for Premium and Professional. I have Vista Ultimate on all my machines and I really don't feel like downgrading.
