I'm running out of ideas. If it's only Vista Home, then they wouldn't be encrypting the files.

Vista and XP store pictures in different folders. Vistas Picture folder is no longer a subfolder in "my documents"

Found the following but it only verifies what's happening. Doesn't get me any closer.

May try a Data recovery program but may also give him back his drive and let him take it some where.
So far I haven't fried his hd so this may be a good time to quit.
Thanks for all your help. It's been an adventure but I'm out matched. "Stick a fork in me, I'm done."

That's not it. It's like a wildcard parameter, but it wouldn't affect the viewing of the folder.
You can try a data recovery app, but if the OS won't allow you to see the files, it will probably prevent the data recovery app from seeing them also.
Oh well. Good luck with that.

Do you mean the Windows serial number or the actual system SID? If you want to enter the old serial number into Vista, that won't help.
So they took the drive and it boots into Vista? Or do you mean they have a new drive in the computer and they are slaving the "bad" drive?

I got his computer and added his drive back in. That was the drive I've been trying to get his data off of. And it booted up. But I still couldn't get into his folders. Figured it might be because I had tried to change ownership of his folders. And wondering if I put his "Current Owner "S-1-5-80-956008885......back in that was originally there.
Right-clicked on one of his folders, click on Properties, click on the "Security"
tab, Advanced, and Owner.

I thought the drive wasn't bootable if you had to put it into your computer? If they could boot to Vista, what happened that made them want to backup the data outside of their own computer?
I don't have a vista machine here, but I don't remember seeing an option to change owner by SID. You can give it a whirl, but I'll have to see for myself once I can get to my Vista box.

He said it wouldn't boot so I only got the drive at first and then after all we went through with no resolve I asked for the machine. Stuck the drive in and it booted up.
The only thing I see is an error message that says "The Recycle Bin on C:\ is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive" besides not being able to find any of his data although it looks like I can see all the folders.
