Resolved [RESOLVED] CD drive suddenly not working

I tried to load a CD in my laptop today but could not access the D drive at all. When I put the CD into my laptop, the light comes on and I can hear the CD loading, but the window that usually pops up no longer pops up and the D drive isn't listed in My Computer. I've attached a screen shot of the My Computer window because very little shows up there. Is there some way I can fix this or will I have to get a new CD drive? I don't think it's broken because, like I said, the light is working and I can hear the CD loading, I just can't access it from my computer.

What OS/service pack are you running? From the screenshot it looks like XP home or pro.

Check your device manager to see if the CD drive is listed properly.

If you see a yellow exclamation point, then it could possibly be a filters problem.

It's XP home with service pack 3. I checked the device manager but didn't really know where to look or even what I was supposed to be looking for.

I said to look for yellow exclamation points in device manager. Why don't you just post a screenshot? Make sure to expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives section.

Did you check the bios? is the drive detected there? If not, then it's not a windows problem. You may need to reseat the CD drive.

Please post make/model of the laptop also. Details help.

    It's a Toshiba Satellite A100.

There was no CD/DVD option there to expand so I ran the Fix It thing from the Microsoft website you posted. Now the CD drive shows up in My Computer but when I click on it, it says D:/ is not accessible. Incorrect function.

It's listed in the Device Manager now, but there's not exclamation point next to it and when I click on it, the window that comes up says that the device is working properly. As for the bios thing, I have no idea how to get into that.

Also, the CD drive was working just a couple of days ago so I tried doing a system restore but could not restore it to the date that I picked. I didn't bother trying a different date.

You would normally hit F1 to get into the Toshiba bios. You need to press it right at the first Toshiba screen when you turn on the computer. If you can see the drive in device manager now, then the drive will be seen in the bios.

Did you try both cds and dvds? It's possible for one of the two lasers to go bad.

Did you try a bootable CD or DVD? That would determine if it's a Windows problem or a hardware problem.

It's working now. Thanks for all of the help. I guess the fix it thing from the Microsoft website fixed it afterall because I didn't do anything else after that.

If the fixit tool didn't tell you, you have to reboot after it's done. Sometimes it prompts you; sometimes it doesn't.
