are there any errors in device manager?
Did you try running shutdown.exe -s from Start-run?

If that command hangs (takes too long), try:shutdown.exe -s -t 0 -f And if nothing happens when you run that command, try:%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0 -f -s = shutdown
-t 0 = a wait time of 0 (zero) seconds
-f = force all programs to close ... even if changes to any documents have not been saved

Midknyte.-
Device manager had only the mouse and keyboard yellowed ! as this computer is here being tested and upgraded. with new purchase of software/hardware.
The hardware is an internal 3.5 Card reader 9in1 with a USB 2.0 port.
This unit is connected to a 1394/USB 2.0 PCI Card. with 2 USB2.0 and 2 Firewire along with the 2 9pin connectors for usb 2.0 internal
I]which seems to be culprit[/I]
I removed the card; the system boots up and shuts down normally.
I tried the card in the second PCI slot; available. with same results.
but, now the DVD does not show in explorer; and has a ! in Device Manager.
This card new from the box. Why the interference?
The dc7600 has two USB 2.0 ports on front with Mic/earphone; which is connected to motherboard via 9pin connector (USB)
I will pull the connection and try the internal on the motherboard direct.
I will try: Uninstall in Device Manager; Disconnect DVD: shutdown; reconnect and see if recognized.
I don't want to backtrack with RESTORE as Office and Other software loaded. if I can work around.
After the trials, I'll be back.... but if any Idea's please reply... Thank You.
If I get a shutdown/reboot I will try the RUN commands.

Getting nowhere!
I uninstalled the DVD, shut-down, Yes this part works without any PCI card inserted.
removed the 40 Pin from the motherboard/and for good measure from the DVD.
rebooted; shutdown; re-installed cabling: rebooted.
No DVD; Do have ! in Device Manager again.
seems to go in circle.
So I rebooted into safe mode and did a restore point to yesterday when I installed MS Office from the DVD drive.
but this time no DVD.
Did another safe mode restore to today, at least I am back up and running;
Could pull it and install as external usb to mine to prove irts working?
hey, I installed software with the drive yesterday, and played music CD from it?
Did a search on HP site and downloaded the(SP41468.exe) driver for lightscribe and loaded in; no change.
Drive lights up on boot sequence, is in device with exclamation but not getting to explorer.

I'm getting a little lost with all the different symptoms.
No DVD; Do have ! in Device Manager again.
seems to go in circle.
Sounds like you need to do the filters fix. Is there an error in the event viewer?

Thanks for the link. have downloaded the .MSI
Will keep on file.
I have sesolved the problem:
Simple explanation is NERO INCD was loaded on the computer.
It was not shown on the desktop; therefore, just passed over.
IN CD and Roxio are the same. As soon as I removed NERO INCD by re-loading the latest update. Back came the DVD-CD in explorer.
Thank You, for your patience, indulgence, and replies.
Most appreciated.
