Good Afternoon. I am in the process of taking out a CD-RW drive from my machine and installing a DVD-ROM/CD combo drive from another machine in the same to allow my grandson to play some of his DVD games. Both machines are similar. I completed the installation and installed one of his games but when we hit play, an error message said "cannot create the device driver for direct 3d". While installing the game, it asked if I wanted to update direct X and I did. I googled for an answer or fix but I don't quite understand what their saying to do. Can any one help in layman terms. As always, thanks in advance for any help.
Did you go into device manager and delete the old drive before you physically removed it? If not,you can do that now. When you reboot,windows will install the new drive automatically. Could have caused confusion to your OS.

It sounds as if the game itself required a later DirectX version, but the DVD player itself may not work unless you have the proper codecs installed as well. (DirectX is a graphics software interface, codecs are hardware-related.) Vista should have them already; XP may or may not depending on your configuration, and 2000 won't. If you need them, K-Lite's package is free and works well. The standard package ought to take care of most needs.
DirectX interface software enables CD/DVD programs to be interpreted and played back by a computer. As with any software it's always being updated/"improved" and there are different versions as a result. Microsoft usually includes the latest production version of DirectX on any given install disk when it's made. As a result, playing newer games on older machines can require updating the installed version of DirectX (as in your case).
The other thing to check is the Region setting of the DVD player. The likelihood of it being wrong is low, but make sure of it anyhow.

My OS is MS Windows XP SP2, and I updated the drivers. The game I installed is Shrek the Third. I also took lgbpops advice and downloaded K-Lites Standard package. I am still receiving the same error. I am trying to convince my grandson to be patient that there is a fix so he can play its just trying to find it. Thanks again
I have since installed a NVIDIA GEForce MX440 W/AGP8X display adapter which I removed from another machine..I am not sure I did it correctly. I installed it in an open slot. The default video adapter is an Intel 82845/GL Graphics Controler which I beleive is intergrated. I did not uninstall or disable it for fear that I might lose video altogether. In device manager it shows both adapters. Each has its own VGA plug in. When I have the VGA plugged into the default, I have video. When I plug it into the NVIDA, I have a blank black screen after boot and welcome. What should I do now.
The reason I do not have SP3, dialup. Takes to long to download Because of the amount of characters, I am attaching the specs. Thanks
Ah. You need to either disable the onboard video or set the nvidia as your primary. I'd disable the onboard video in the onboard video in the bios, or at least set the AGP port as primary. If you keep both, you need to go into display properties and set the nvidia card as the primary display.
And a new video card, from these requirements, is needed.
