Reducing Uploaded Data
My ISP charges on the data downloaded and uploaded. For the month of March, I had these totals shown by NetMeter: Upload -511.42MB, Download – 537.74MB
I can understand the amount of data I downloaded. But I do not know what on earth I uploaded to reach this amount. Could anyone explain this to me?
What can I do to reduce the amount of data uploaded?

Normally, as you seem to be aware, upload should be a fraction of download unless you've specifically chosen to upload data yourself. (email attachments sent can add up quickly if that's a possibility and it wouldn't take long to add up to 500 megs.. a single cd is only 650-700 megs)
Sometimes this can be an indication of a malware infection. If you or someone else using your computer hasn't been uploading files then follow these instrucitons to rule out the possibility of a viral infection...
Print these instructions out.
NOTE. If any of the programs listed below refuse to run, try renaming executive file to something else; for instance, rename hijackthis.exe to scanner4.exe
1. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
* Close SUPERAntiSpyware.
PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET
Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; select Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

* Back on the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.

* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK.

Also, you can use Netmeter to monitor your PC when it's idle to see if data is being sent out. If there is you can look in taskmanager to see if any specific process seems to be busy (using CPU cycles/percentage)

Thanks, Fink.
I'll print the instructions you gave and carry them out.
But after I sent the post, I scanned my PC with my antivirus AVG 8 Free and had some infections healed. For today, right now, NetMeter reports : Download - 13.98MB;Upload 802.1Kb. This I believe is a right proportion. Two days ago, it was DL-43.94MB,UL-44.08MB; which I now understand to be very suspicious.
I have just updated SAS and MBAM which is already installed on my PC and downloaded GMER as you said. Later in the day, I will do as you said and report back.
Thank you, once again.

Thank you, Fink, for your assistance as always.
But after going through your recommendations as well as doing several scans with other security applications, my PC is reported as being clean.
I immediately suspected that NetMeter (ReadError) was reporting wrong traffic data. To test, I downloaded and installed other traffic counters to compare.
The statistics reported are as below:
Product DL UL TOTAL
Hoo Technologies - Net Meter 3.59MB 425.4KB 4.0MB
Desksoft - BWMeter 3.52MB 425.8KB 4.0MB
Utikit - DLULMeter 3.58MB 425.4KB 4.0MB
ReadError - NetMeter 7.62MB 7.63MB 15.25MB
It is clear from the foregoing that NetMeter is giving wrong information.
Can you give me a second opinion?
I shall look forward to hearing from you.
