    DVD/CD burn failure

Dell Dimension 9200 - Vista Home Premium

When trying to burn DVD's and CD's using both Roxio and Vista the burn process starts then just stops before completion. Discs come out mostly as blanks although one did come out showing some space had been used but was unreadable. Sometimes cannot get disc out of drive without reboot. Sometimes explorer stops working following burn attempt. Writable (SATA) drive has been swapped out for another but problem the same with both original and replacement drive. Have done a little digging on the net and the only solution I have come across so far is I have come up with so far is to try updating the SATA drivers.

Any and all advice as always gratefully received

    Thanks in advance

Have you tried removing it in Device Manager and rebooting yet? Windows should then run through its "Found New Hardware" routine and re- set it up for you.

(Click the Windows logo [Orb] at the left end of the Taskbar. In the "Start Search" bar, type in:
    devmgmt.msc
and press [Enter]. In Device Manager, click the [+] sign to the left of "DVD/CD-ROM drives", right-click your DVD/CD-ROM drive, select "Uninstall", click "OK", close Device Manager and reboot).

Sorry should have added - tried that, device manager recognises drive and drive reads discs OK its just when it comes to burning that problems occur.

Thanks for the input much appreciated.

Does device manager identify the drive correctly? Do you have the latest drivers and firmware for the drive?

Drive recognises drive correctly by name/manufacturer and latest drivers were downloaded from manufacturers site.
Suspect it is an issue either with Vista or the Sata drivers as both the original and replacement drives exhibit the same problem/behaviour.

Thanks for the input much appreciated.

Try changing the SATA cable, I've had problems with them in the past, and they can cause some real hair-puller errors.

Sorry for the delay in posting back

Drive now seems to burn CD's and DVD R but will not burn DVD RW's

If you try and erase a DVD RW it just corrupts the disc and makes it unreadable.

    Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks

Now you know why DVD-RW disk are not liked or used by most of us.

Roxio will never be installed on any of my computers either.

    But I do use CDBurnerXP
