When reformatting HD using WinMe, and then using WinXp home upgrade is it necessary to acquire updates for Me before installing the WinXp upgrade?

First off you don't need to install ME before upgrading to XP. You can do a clean install with an upgrade XP disk. All you need is to show Windows that you have the required OS to use the upgrade disk. After starting the install, using the XP disk, chose clean install and then it will ask to see the WindowsME disk. Just put your disk in the drive, after a few minutes it will ask for the XP disk again. Just remove the ME disk and replace with the xp disk. Install will continue.
