Try these:
1. Download Windows Update Fix to your desktop.
Double click on downloaded file, and allow registry merge.
Restart computer.
2. Download, and run Windows Update Repair Tool: http://software.hitoma.com/WURT/
To download the tool, click on I Agree link.
Restart computer, when done.

I thought I posted this, but it I guess it didn't go through:
I downloaded the windows update fix and clicked on it. It did its thing, and then I rebooted. It froze during the reboot. I restarted in safe mode, system restore, etc.
I then connected the computer directly to the cable modem (bypassing the router) and tried to update. It did the same old thing.
I started a session with microsoft, but that's a slow process. How important are these updates, anyway??
