Power Supply is dead :( What are some good brands?
I went to my computer a few hours ago and it was off and wouldn't turn on.
I took out the motherboard cable and shorted green to black and nothing happened. This leads me to assume that the power supply is dead.
I haven't built a computer in two and a half years. What are the good power supplies brands right now? The PSU was an Antec 550W TPII-550.
so, a ~600W would be good.
Thanks in advanced.

My favourite brands of PSU are; Tagan, OCZ, Thermaltake, Enermax, Hiper, Xion, PC Power & Cooling.

I think it's going to be: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341010
I am on Christmas break from my university right now.. and so I don't really -need- the PSU at the moment. I am gonna wait a bit and see if something nice shows up on slickdeals.net
There is also this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817190017
but.. "Cons: It has been 6 months and XION does not honor their rebates." kind of makes me wanna stay away.
Thanks

Either would be a good choice. Out of the two I'd probably go for the OCZ.

Another vote for Thermaltake. Have had a couple for a long time and no issues whatsoever. Very stable output current (monitored via MOBO app and I do O/C), very quiet.
Nimo N152B (AMD R5, W11H) and plenty of other legacy systems :-)

OCZ is a rebadged PC Power unit if I remember right, a very good PSU. I like XIONs a lot (I have three 600Ws running here, 21 months newest to 3½ years oldest) but I'd take that OCZ unit for that price.

Did the price on that OCZ unit go up? and lol, the xion is gone o.o
I am actually thinking about trying out a tuniq power supply. The price is right, and they seem to have decent reviews.

The problem with buying one that is not on our list is you run the risk of your new power supply blowing up and taking everything with it. Stick to the known brands and you won't have a problem. I've seen power supplies that went out, blew up took everything with it including motherboard, optical drives, and harddrives. I wouldn't trust any but the trusted brands to my equipment.

Newegg - XION

Photolady is not the only one to find the case was the only thing that could be saved after the ps blew up / quit.

Whereas when my Thermaltake blew up a couple of years ago it didn't damage a single thing, plus they were as good as gold about replacing it

Thermotake vs Bestec. A huge difference and as you noted a lot cheaper to fix.
