Change to Malwarebytes and Spywareblaster...

Hi All,

I recently changed to these apps from Spybot S&D and AdAware, mostly because of the recommendations and reviews in this forum.
Must say they seem to run smooth, fast and less resource-hogging.
They have yet to find anything though at all... should that be a reason for concern?

Also, S&D included a startup apps tool, which either of the above seems to lack. What are you using now to monitor and manage startups?

SpywareBlaster works in the background and is very complementary to other antimalware programs. It is proactive (blocking incoming malware), but you will not see it operate.
Unless you buy the paid version of MalwareBytes, it does not block malware proactively. You have to run a scan for it to detect whatever baddies you have.

What are you using now to monitor and manage startups

I am not sure what you want here. I do not monitor startups. I just set it up and do not think about it much unless strange things start happening.
The least sophisticated way to control what starts up is Start|type msconfig|OK|Startup tab.

Winpatrol barks (yes, like a dog) when something is added to startup. You have the option of accepting or denying the addition. Does lots of other stuff too, most of which can be done with Windows utilities but Winpatrol is easier. Free.

MSconfig must be for XP or so, not working in my W2K... I was looking for something like that in 2K but can't find or remember.
Will give startup patrol and winpatrol a shot soon...

Another vote for WinPatrol.

It's easier to prevent infection than it is to try and remove it.

S&D included a startup apps tool

That part of Spybot (TeaTimer), unfortunately, is known for causing problem, so you're not gonna miss it.

Msconig for reasons known to M$ only, wasn't included in Win 2K, but XP version works fine on 2000. Download: http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/m/msconfig_w2k.htm

MSconfig is not a prt of 2000.

But the one in XP will work in 2000.

You can add msconfig to Windows 2000 by putting it in the
c:\winnt\system32\ folder.

Now as long as you are running 2000, keep a back up copy of that file.

Interesting app Broni. 248 MB is quite large and M$ stopped them in 07 from continuing.
Have you used it? Pro/Con?

I have it installed on Win 2K, but that's my test installation, so I don't play with it too much.
